A Slower Year Starts Here
A calm reset, a few pairing rules we’re ignoring, and a new way to enjoy cigars this year.

🥃 A Slower Year Starts Here
January 1st always arrives with noise.
New goals. New rules. New systems. New versions of ourselves that are supposed to activate overnight.
Smoke Signals isn’t here for that.
This space has never been about rushing, optimizing every pleasure, or turning small rituals into performance. Cigars and good pours don’t reward speed. They reward attention. And if there’s one thing worth carrying into a new year, it’s that.
What We’re Not Chasing This Year
Let’s start there.
We’re not chasing:
the rarest bottle
the loudest opinions
the fastest trends
the idea that everything needs to be reviewed, ranked, or justified
There’s enough of that everywhere else.
This year isn’t about having more.
It’s about enjoying what you already reach for.
What a Good Smoke Still Teaches Us
A cigar is a stubborn thing.
You can’t rush it without consequences. You can’t force it to behave. If you ignore it, it reminds you. If you pay attention, it rewards you.
That’s a decent philosophy for a year.
A good smoke asks:
Are you actually present?
Or are you already thinking about what’s next?
The answer matters more than the brand.
The Tone for the Year Ahead
Smoke Signals in the year ahead will stay true to what brought you here in the first place:
Real enjoyment, not manufactured hype
Pairings that make sense, not just look good on paper
Stories over scores
Curiosity over certainty
Some weeks will be informative. Some reflective. Some are just fun. Not every issue needs to teach. Some just need to remind.
A Small Suggestion for Today
If you’re smoking today, keep it simple.
Pick something familiar. Pour something forgiving. Step outside or sit quietly where you are. Let the first smoke of the year be calm, not ceremonial.
And if you’re not smoking today? That’s fine too. The year is long. Cigars wait patiently. Always have.
🍕 Cigar Pairings, But Make It Pizza
Somewhere along the way, cigars got trapped in a steakhouse.
White tablecloths. Heavy cuts. Big red wines. Serious faces.
And sure — steak and cigars work. But they’re not the only relationship worth having.
Lately, I’ve been breaking a different rule: pairing cigars with pizza instead of steak.
Casual food. Big flavors. Zero pretense. And honestly? It works better than you’d think.
Pepperoni brings spice. Mushrooms add earthiness. Charred crust echoes toasted wrapper notes. And suddenly that medium-bodied cigar you’d never light at a steakhouse makes perfect sense on the couch with a slice and a cold drink.
That idea turned into my newest YouTube video — a deep dive into why pizza is one of the most underrated cigar pairing foods, which cigars actually work with it, and which ones absolutely don’t.
No tuxedos. No tasting wheels. Just real-world pairings you’d actually try on a Friday night.

If you’ve ever thought cigar culture takes itself a little too seriously, this one’s for you.
One Last Thing
Smoke Signals isn’t here to tell you what you should like.
It’s here to help you notice what you already enjoy — and give you permission to slow down enough to enjoy it fully.
That’s the only resolution worth keeping.
Welcome to the year ahead.
Pull up a chair. Take your time.
