About Me

From Railways to the Police Force

After graduating from high school, I began my professional journey with a one-year stint as an electrical apprentice at Canadian National Rail. This initial experience instilled a strong work ethic and a passion for learning. In 1981, seeking greater challenges and opportunities to serve my community, I joined the Winnipeg Police, marking the beginning of a long and varied career in law enforcement.

A Dedicated Career in Law Enforcement

During my time with the Winnipeg Police, I had the privilege of serving in various capacities. I started in General Patrol, gaining invaluable experience on the front lines. My journey continued through divisional detectives, the Juvenile & Sex Crimes Division, and as a breathalyzer operator. Each role brought unique challenges and learning opportunities. Over the years, I've accumulated many memorable experiences and stories I cherish deeply. (Buy me a few beers, and I’ll tell you about the famous musician I did a breathalyzer test on!)

Discovering a Passion for Cigars

In 1998, I was introduced to the aromatic world of cigars, and it quickly became a passion. My first favorite brand was Fonseca, which is straight from Cuba. Being in Canada, I had the luxury of enjoying Cuban cigars, which only deepened my appreciation for them. The rich flavors, intricate craftsmanship, and camaraderie of sharing a good cigar captivated me from the start.

A New Chapter in Real Estate

After retiring from the police force in 2005, I sought a new challenge and transitioned to a career in real estate. I joined REMAX as a residential agent, where I found a new way to serve my community. Helping people find their dream homes has been incredibly rewarding, and I continue to work in real estate to this day, enjoying every moment of it.

Embracing the Cigar Lifestyle

In 2012, I purchased a winter home in Phoenix, AZ. This move had a delightful side effect: regular access to cigars at US prices. The warm climate and vibrant cigar culture in Phoenix allowed me to immerse myself even further into the world of cigars. My love for cigars has only grown, and it remains a significant part of my life. I cherish the moments spent enjoying a fine cigar, whether alone in quiet reflection or in the company of friends.

A Labor of Love

This "Smoke Signals Weekly" newsletter is a labor of love. It combines my passions for cigars, high-end liquors, and the BBQ lifestyle. I aim to share my knowledge, experiences, and enthusiasm with you through this newsletter. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy producing it. Cheers to the finer things in life – cigars, high-end liquors, and the BBQ lifestyle!

Thank you for joining me on this journey.
